Beauty freebie: Bobbi Brown Bobbi To Go

During February, Bobbi Brown Australia promoted “Makeup Lesson February“.

This was a daily calendar promoting their always available free make up and skincare consultations. Each day in the February calendar, a new offer would be revealed. You could get skincare and cosmetic tips, online videos, as well as “treats” (freebies)!

Of course, what interested me the most were the treats! The treats on offer included Bobbi Brown key rings, stickers and even deluxe make-up samples.

By the time I found out about the promotion I only managed to get one of the treats, which was this awesome Bobbi To Go pack! 😀

As you can see, the Bobbi To Go pack includes a Weekend Lip Palette with 5 colours in different textures, lip brush and mirror and one deluxe sample size of Black Extreme Party Mascara. This was a really generous freebie! 😀 Thanks Bobbi Brown!

Now that February has just ended, I have to say I’m pretty surprised how low-key the promotion for this was. I only managed to hear about it through their facebook page, which I had liked. I don’t recall hearing about it anywhere else?

Although on the expensive side, Bobbi Brown often provides some great deluxe sample offers and their products are top quality. These samples are a great way to discover the brand and their range.

New Olay Total Effects Pore Minimising Range

Recently I was given the opportunity to try some new Olay products.

Disclaimer: Products provided free as part of a survey panel. No review was required to be written online, but I just felt like sharing 🙂

The products are (pictured left to right):
  1. Olay Total Effects Cream Normal 50g
  2. Olay Total Effects Pore Minimising Toner 150ml
  3. Olay Total Effects Pore Minimising CC Cream 50g
The Pore Minimising products are so new, that I can’t even find the official Australian webpages for them yet! (Edit on 6 March 2015, links now added). The star active ingredient of all three products is niacinamide, which is proven to help treat uneven skin tone and the red marks (hyperpigmentation) left after acne. Even better that niacinamide is listed as either the third or fourth ingredient for these products, and not near the bottom. Actually, niacinamide is featured quite heavily in a lot of Olay’s promoted products, especially their pricier lines, like Regenerist.
Anyway, read on to find my opinion on this new range!

1. Olay Total Effects Cream Normal

This is classic for a good reason! This is not actually part of the new range, but I wanted to start with this one. After almost three weeks of continued use of this moisturiser, I really do think my skin appears more radiant and even-toned. And no trickery use of mica either, which I detest in skincare products. Make-up okay, but not skincare. It’s very creamy in texture and applies easily. It doesn’t feel like I have a thick layer on. It is fairly moisturising, but with my dehydrated skin, I need boosters through serums and Hada Labo lotion. Unfortunately, the silicone heavy formula means it can visually accumulate on my skin when I’m using more products on top, like sunscreen, but especially make up. After a bit of over a month’s trial and error, my tip for preventing this is don’t use too much. I think I was being too generous with my initial pumps. Less product will be reduce the probability of balling. Overall, this is another recommend from me! This is priced at $32.99, so I would recommend waiting for a sale. A 40% off sale at Priceline would bring this down to just under $20, which I think is fair price to pay for such an effective product.

2. Olay Total Effects Pore Minimising Toner

This product is supposed to be used straight after cleansing and I really enjoyed using this product. The product feels watery and looks clear. It’s a refreshing toner. Unfortunately, ingredients do list alcohol and menthol, which can be irritating. Olay tries to balance these bad ingredients with various plant extracts, like cucumber, aloe, snow fungus, kelp and mulberry, so I feel that the toner doesn’t make my skin tight. I use this Asian style in the morning (pour on hand and pat into face) and Western style at night (pour on cotton pad and wipe skin). Despite double cleansing at night, the pad still does not wipe clean! Probably more an indication that I need to change my cleansers! Has it made my pores smaller? Unrealistic to say yes, but I do feel like my skin is cleaner after using this product. And cleaner and clearer pores can give the illusion of smaller pores! I don’t know what the pricing of this will be, but if it’s reasonable, this is a recommend from me!
Edit on 6 March 2015: The product has now finally been released. The RRP is $15.99. I would deem this reasonable pricing, but still recommend to wait for a sale. More of $10 type of product.

3. Olay Total Effects Pore Minimising CC Cream

I was supposed to trial all products at least for 14 days, but I couldn’t do it with it this one. I was quite excited to get a new CC cream as I was running low on full size foundation products in my stockpile. CC stands for Colour Corrector and they are supposed to be similar to tinted moisturisers. I was given Light which is really light. Anyhow, the shade doesn’t matter anyway, as this provides like only 1% coverage! I had been thinking that another CC product I was using had low coverage, but this Olay one is almost nothing! I would equate this CC cream more to those instablur/nanoblur type of primers, which “blur” out some imperfections like fine lines and pores using silicones. Personally, I found this just sat in my pores and I also felt that it contributed to skin congestion. It has SPF15 which is fair, but I really think SPF30 should be minimum in Australia. That said, I have no idea of the UVA protection, since Australia is so behind on UVA protection labelling. According to packaging claims, it can be used as a sole moisturiser. My response: No way! This is not hydrating at all! Also, when applying, I felt fine grits, which kind of hurts my sensitive skin! And then after application, my skin also felt a bit itchy. Unfortunately, this is a not recommend from me.
Edit on 6 March 2015: The advertising copy for this particular product is laughable! “I want a Flawless Finish without an Airbrush”! Sorry, but you won’t get even close to this unless you already have relatively good skin. Apparently the RRP for the 50g version of this product (the one I received, but it appears a 20g version is also available) is $39.99! Oh my God! Bahahaha! For that price, go and get a real foundation!

Summary

Well, as they say, two out of three ain’t bad. The Total Effects Cream is available now. Not sure when the Pore Minimising products will be, but keep a look out to see whether the range is for you!

Free Moca Loca Chocolate Peel at the Paramedical Skin Clinic

I took part in a free facial tonight.

As part of attending the Catherine Manuell Design VIP Night during the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week festivities, glorious and generous goodie bags were being given away. One of these goodies was a voucher for a free Moca Loca Chocolate Peel at Paramedical Skin Clinic. I had previously seen this “clinic” advertised frequently in the local paper and their simple ads usually grabbed my attention. And since it’s in my local paper, that meant I had one very nearby to my house. So as soon as I saw the voucher offer, I got excited and made the call the very next morning!

I arrived at the venue tonight, initially being a little confused as to how to enter. After waiting for about ten minutes, they were ready for my skin analysis. This ended up being the main time component of the offer. It was a very comprehensive skin analysis, where my face was taken at three different angles in a special machine and then analysed in a software program. Some of the pictures were shocking. Especially the UV one. Have you ever played around with the RGB Channels in Photoshop? It’s like that, but millions times worse. My whole face was one pigmentation farm 😯 The right side of my face is also more droopy than the left! I’m getting old!!! 😦 The consultation was given by the owner Ilesha Haywood, who had a warm and friendly manner. She also sounded very knowledgeable.

As we looked through my shame inducing photos, Ilesha began to discuss the recommended treatments. A very expensive recommendation at that! Her advice was to undergo both a course of 12 Jet Peels and 7 “Dermal” IPL within a 12 week period. I have previously been interested in IPL, but I was hoping not to have to do additional treatments too. I understand Jet Peel is their star treatment. Then she showed me the prices at which I became speechless! $720 per a Jet Peel and $550 per IPL?! Apparently they had a September special, where buying bulk treatments would save significantly. However, even after discounts, I would be forking out nearly $7000!!!! Honestly, I do have that type of money but I’m not ready to part with that amount yet…

After this extensive consultation, I finally got to the main event; why I was here; why I hadn’t had dinner yet; the facial peel! I was led into a white room. Paramedical Skin Clinic is not a beauty day spa, so there’s not really any typical dimmed lighting or scented candles. In fact, I found the treatment rooms quite “clinical”. I guess that is in their name… Hmm, I’m not sure if it’s because I wasn’t a paying customer or I hadn’t shouted “Sign me up for everything!”, but I felt that the facialist was rushing and just going through the motions. I was given a quick cleanse, scrub, a short cherry peel and then the chocolate peel. It’s just a simple Lactic Acid “peel” and you can buy it online. It tingles slightly, but not very much. After about 10 minutes, the facialist washed it off and hastily applied moisturiser. I checked my face in the mirror. Although it looked slightly more glowy, I had bits of product in my hair and below my chin. During the facial, she also got a bit of the peel in one of my eye area… I think the whole peel experience took less than 25 minutes! According to my voucher, it was worth $150. According to the website, the peel costs $125. If I were a full paying customer, I would have been extremely disappointed at this customer treatment…. :\

Next I was given the sell. Some interesting products, but is there really any point in buying a $75 cleanser?! With the sell unsuccessful on me, I took my recommended treatment prescription with me and walked back home.

To be honest, I think I walked in there seriously wanting to do a full course of IPL (although not necessarily at this clinic), but I walked away unimpressed and now even doubting to do anything “fancy” for at least a while…

Milly for Clinique Spring 2011 Offer

Milly for Clinique Spring 2011 Brochure

To promote Clinique’s Spring Trend 2011: Pretty in Prints, Clinique is offering a free sample of their Quickliner for Eyes in 07 Really Black with a complimentary Milly themed makeover at their counters.

I went on Friday afternoon during my lunchbreak and received a fresh and pretty makeover. It was great that it wasn’t overboard as I had to return back to work. The free eyeliner sample doesn’t have a brush like the full-sized sample. I tried to take a pic in the office bathrooms, but the lighting was all wrong and you couldn’t see anything different anyway. I only had the makeover on my face for a few hours before I had to wash it off after gym, but I can’t say the make-up smudged. I was probably most impressed with this Invisible Matte powder, which wasn’t actually part of the Milly collection. It didn’t sink into my pores or highlight my flakies.

Eyes: First three eyeshadow colours in the Pretty In Prints Compact and Quickliner for Eyes in 07 Really Black.
Face: Blush from Pretty In Prints Compact in Precious Posy and Stay-Matte Sheer Pressed Powder Oil-Free in Invisible Matte.
Lips: Limited-edition Long Last Glosswear SPF 15 in Milly Pink.

David Jones Limited Edition Coach bag charm

Scored this lovely item for free last week at David Jones. They are giving it away to celebrate their new Coach mini store in the Melbourne CBD.
Print this page out and show it to your nearest DJs Coach sales assistant.

Unfortunately the chain is too short to be a bracelet – even for the skinniest adult female. Then again, the charms are probably too big and bulky for a bracelet. The nice sales assistant said it’s a bag charm. On the underside of the Coach tag charm is an engraving showing that it’s an exclusive item just for DJs!

Biotherm Express Facial

During my lunch break last Thursday, I managed to sneak in a Biotherm Express Facial.
This usually costs $35, but last month I went to Are You Game? where they had a Biotherm tent offering a card for a complimentary appointment at Biotherm counters.

I forgot the difference that a facial can make! I had my facial at Melbourne Myer. I was led into a warm and relatively quiet room (could still hear some muffled construction noise in the background) with the “bed” in the middle. I was relieved that I wasn’t going to be in front of passer-by customers. I was treated to a very relaxing facial – a retreat from a very busy workday. Honestly, I had no idea what products were used on me, but I didn’t mind. This just meant that the Biotherm consultant did not try to [up]sell me.

The facial went on for about 30 minutes and I think I had a cleansing, hydrating mask, multiple mist sprays, moisturiser and eye cream. A facial reminds you of the face washing and moisturing techniques that you forget to do at home – or are just too tired or time-pushed. These are mainly just ensuring the face is always had some moisture (e.g. via a mist spray) and very firm massinging of the cleanser and moisturiser.

Somehow in the middle of the facial, she found out that I could speak Cantonese, which stressed me out a little bit I had to continue the chatter in Cantonese, which I am only good at specific topics.

I left the session with my face feeling very hydrated. For the few days afterwards, my face felt very soft, the skintone was more even and my pores also appeared smaller. It’s been a week since the facial, so unfortunately my skin isn’t as great any more. If I had the funds, it would be great if I could have facials weekly or even just every few months, rather than once a year because I got a voucher!

Mecca Cosmetica Beauty Icons

This month, Mecca Cosmetica are promoting their Beauty Icons. These are beauty products which have achieved special star power, either through strategically marketed PR hype or they just actually work!

Going one further, they are offering different deluxe sample packs to those booking makeovers or via Vogue magazine coupon redemption With the Vogue coupon, I dropped by the Myer Melbourne store yesterday and received these 5 free goodies!

The photo turned out too blue (my weak PS skills didn’t help), but I receved the following in a foil zip-lock bag:

I think each pack might have slightly different beauty icons, so you may not receive exactly the same items. To get an idea of other possible items, check out the Mecca Cosmetica Beauty Icons Box; this is only available with a $90 redeemable makover.

Late bloomer note, but I finally discovered in-store why Stila Kitten eyeshadow is so popular! It gives a lovely creamy iridescent champagne glow/shimmer without obvious particles of mica or glitter. Would have loved to get the Kitten refill in my bag!
